Monday 4 July 2011 - Loch Aline to Oban

Left the narrow entrance to Loch Aline followed closely by the ferry.  A workboat had just lifted one of the channel marks, looked it over (I presume) and put it back in place, fortunately before we reached it.

A warm, sunny day for a change. Heading back SW in the sound of Mull we found ourselves on a beat, having had a beat coming the other way yesterday - that's sailing.  Seemed quite crowded with about 12 yachts visible!  We went round the S end of Kerrera, pausing to put in a reef. Then took the main down to avoid rushing up the Sound of Kerrera without time to find the marks.  We need not have worried - the wind dropped and we had a sedate trip.

Our boat, big boats and superyacht
We were given a big berth, which does not really compensate for them charging for electricity and showers and providing spring water of dubious fitness for consumption - maybe we will hold on and fill up elsewhere. At least there is a free shuttle ferry to Oban.  We will try it tomorrow.

Sound of Kerrera
This place seems to attract the big boats and is sized accordingly.  There are several boats on the 50ft range. The first 2 spaces on our pontoon contain a Hallberg-Rassey 49 and a H-R 53, both in between the same pair of finger pontoons, with about 1 metre between the boats.  There are several large boats on the mooring here including an elegant ketch from Denmark.  Well out in the bay an enormous navy blue boat is anchored, which has 3 sets of spreaders on the mizzen and 4 on the main mast, a red light at the top of the mast (presumably to warn off passing aircraft) and decorative downlights on each of the spreaders.  I wonder how many places it can actually get into!
